Update 9/9/22: The Paramount+ benefit is now live on Walmart+ subscriptions. In order to activate it, begin by navigating to your Walmart+ account page and clicking the button that says “How streaming works.” This will take you to the Paramount+ page. Click “Get Paramount+” and you will be sent to the Paramount+ website to create an account.
Last year, American Express, in its never-ending quest to provide the most expensive coupon book in modern times, gave Platinum cardholders a monthly credit for Walmart+ subscriptions.
Walmart+ is Wally World’s attempt to counter Amazon Prime. You get free shipping on items that are stocked by Walmart as well as same-day, free delivery from your local store with a $35+ order. As Stephen pointed out in his terrific post about ways to cut down on gas costs, Walmart+ members also save 10 cents per gallon on fuel at Walmart, Murphy and ExxonMobil stations.
Still, the move by Amex was somewhat mocked across the points and miles ecosphere because, well, nothing says “luxury” quite like Walmart.
Now Walmart has added an additional benefit to Walmart+ memberships. Starting in September, Walmart+ members will have free access to the Paramount+ Essential Plan as part of their membership. This will give members access to most Paramount+ content with “limited” ads.
The Deal
- Get free access to Paramount+ Essential Plan ($4.99/month value) with a paid Walmart+ subscription.
- In order to activate it, begin by navigating to your Walmart+ account page and clicking the button that says “How streaming works.” This will take you to the Paramount+ page. Click “Get Paramount+” and you will be sent to the Paramount+ website to create an account.
Quick Thoughts.
This seems like another attempt by Walmart more close align Walmart+ with Amazon Prime by adding a (much less comprehensive) streaming option for members. That said, it definitely increases the appeal of the membership and will actually get me to use my AMex Platinum Walmart+ benefit. There are a couple of shows that we enjoy that only exist on Paramount+, as well as access to NFL football and both European and American soccer.
Currently, Walmart says that access will begin in September, but there’s no official launch date. In the meantime, if you have a Platinum card and haven’t started using the Walmart+ benefit, now might be the time. Start by enrolling within your cardmember benefits on the American Express website. Then, just use your enrolled Platinum Card to pay for your monthly Walmart+ membership and you’ll receive a statement credit within 3-5 days of the charge.
